No matter what type of small business you own, it’s a good idea to investigate the benefits of joining your local Chamber of Commerce. Depending of the size of the metropolitan area where you live, you may benefit from becoming a member of several chambers: the large organization for the major metropolitan area where you live, plus smaller chambers that serve smaller towns and communities within the region where you are located and/or where you do business.

Benefits of Chamber Membership
While each Chamber of Commerce is different, it’s a fact that there are many benefits associated with getting involved with this type of organization. A few of the many reasons that joining a chamber is a good idea include:

Networking Opportunities – Most Chambers of Commerce offer a variety of networking opportunities for members, including special events, business expos, fundraising events, and more. When you become a member of your local chamber of commerce, you’ll be able to participate in a wide variety of activities where you’ll be able to meet other professionals and business owners across a wide variety of industries and occupations.

Make Business Contacts – As an outgrowth of participating in the networking opportunities provided by your local Chamber of Commerce, you’ll also have an opportunity to grow your business. You’ll likely meet many people who have the potential to become customers or referral sources for your business or organization.

Supporting Economic Development – As a small business owner, it’s likely you understand just how important growth of the area where you do business is to your long term success. As a member of your local Chamber of Commerce, you’ll be taking a positive step toward supporting economic development in your region. Your membership alone will make a strong statement that you believe in, and choose to be an active participant in, your local business community.
Additional Benefits – These are just a few of the many membership benefits common to Chamber of Commerce organizations. Actual benefits may vary based on the structure of the particular organizations in your area.

Finding Your Local Chamber
If you aren’t sure how to get in touch with your local Chamber of Commerce, you can utilize the directory published on the United States Chamber of Commerce website. Look up the organizations in your area, and get in touch with a membership department representative. He or she can explain the specifics of how membership can benefit you, as well as provide you with information about the dues structure.
