Forum Marketing – A Free and Easy Way to Promote Your Business Online

Date August 17, 2008 By Mary White

If you’re like most small business owners, you’re very concerned with getting the most from your marketing budget. The good news is that there are many things you can do to promote your business using the Internet, no matte what size your company is or who your primary target market is. Forum marketing is one of the easiest ways to let others know abut your company and build valuable backlinks to your company’s website – and it doesn’t cost a thing but an investment of time!

1. Identify the Right Forums

If forum marketing sounds like something you want to try, the first step you need to take is to identify forums that reach the audience that you’re interested in reaching. Do an Internet search to see what types of forums you can find. For example, if you sell a product that you want to market to individuals who own direct sales businesses, do a search for “direct sales forum”. You’ll find websites such as the Direct Sales Women Community Forum, http://www.directsaleswomen.com/community_forums the Christian Work at Home Mom Forum http://www.christianwahm.com/modules/newbb/viewforum.php?forum=22, and many others.

2. Get to Know the Forums

When you’ve found forums that seem to reach your target audience, spend a little time browsing them so you can see how active they are and what types of discussions take place. This will help you get a sense of whether or not your participation is appropriate and how you should approach joining in the virtual chat. The last thing you want to do is start participating before you have a sense of what type and style of communication is appropriate in the forum. Each of these types of websites has a unique personality, and you need to be sure that your posts are consistent with the spirit of the group.

3. Join in the Group

Before you start posting, you’ll need to register as a user. Be sure to read the guidelines and rules so you’re clear on what is and is not allowed. Most forums aren’t going to allow you to post straight sales messages. That’s not what you should be doing anyway. Join in the chat, position yourself as a resource of valuable information for the participants, so you can build an effective business networking relationship with them. The marketing benefit will come from the link to your company’s website that you place in your signature line. When other participants realize that you’re a great source of information, there’s a good chance that they’ll want to learn more about what you do. When they click through to your website, you have an opportunity to convert them to customers.
