In recent years, internet marketing has evolved from trial and error to a multi-billion dollar industry.  Many of the businesses across the nation, and a number of individuals as well, have turned to internet marketing as a way to promote their goods and services.  Because the virtual world of the internet is so different from the physical world when it comes to purchasing goods and services, different types of marketing techniques for the internet have been created, launching a whole new internet marketing industry.

There are several different types of internet marketing techniques that may be used by businesses or individuals to promote the goods and services that they have to offer.  Each of the techniques is geared towards a slightly different audience and the internet marketing technique that is chosen depends on which marketing technique the business owner likes the best and who the target audience for that business is.  In many cases, the business will try two or three different internet marketing techniques before finding the one that is right for their business.

One of the most popular types of internet marketing at the moment is search engine marketing, also known as SEO or search engine optimization marketing.  Search engine marketing involves manipulating the content of your webpage to make it more attractive to the leading search engines, thereby having your webpage displayed higher in the search results for a specific term than your competitor’s websites.  Having your webpage listed higher in the search results of the search engine exposes your website to more individuals, as most people will only look at the first 20 results returned by the search engine before either refining or abandoning their search.

Another popular type of internet marketing is visual marketing, which involves the use of banner ads and ads placed around specific content to market a company, a product, or a service.  These ads are generally chosen to match the content of the website or web page that the ad is placed on.  In some cases, multiple banner ads are present on a single web page, as the number of banner ads allowed on the web page is determined by the person that created the web page.

Affiliate marketing is another type of internet marketing that is proving to be popular with both businesses and website developers.  With affiliate marketing, the business pays the affiliate a predetermined amount of money for each person that travels from the affiliate’s website to the business’s website, usually using strategically placed links.  This benefits the business by directing more targeted traffic to their website and helps the affiliate be enabling them to make money with their website by using this internet marketing technique.
